Basic Requirements for Becoming a Security Guard
To begin, you must be at least 18 years of age to complete any form of security and must be at least 21 years of age to work within the armed security field. From there, there are three basic requirements to becoming a security guard.
1. Apply for Your Guard Card
The first thing you need to do to become a security guard is to apply for an 8 hour course to get your guard license, in a term referred to as “getting your guard card”. This course is licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), and is composed of two different sections. In one half of the course, you will be learning about Powers to Arrest and the second half contains information about weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
2. Complete Required Training Hours
Many courses offer this 8 hour course online, for example Practical Defense Systems, offers the guard card course on-line. You must complete the 8 hour security guard Training requirement prior to being assigned on post annually and before you start your security detail. Then, you complete 16 hours of the training course online within the first 30 days, and complete another 16 hours within the first six months. This may sound daunting, but can be easily completed in 10 days ( 10 days X 4 hours = 40 hours). The 32 hours must be completed within the first six months, but it is recommended that you complete as soon as possible.
3. Complete Criminal Background Check
The second step is to complete a LiveScan criminal history background check through the FBI and through the DOJ, and complete this form. Applicants are responsible for these fees, and you can find a location for a LiveScan site here.
4. Submit Your Application
To submit an initial application to register as a security guard online, please click this link, where you will register and complete the forms that will be required. If unable to complete online, there is also a print version of the forms that you can print out, one for the application and one form for the application fees. It will take about a month to a month and a half for the application to be processed, so don’t stress!
